The country wastes 80% of its hydroelectric, wind, and geothermal potential to generate clean energy and instead, it produces with more expensive and contaminating fossil fuels.

According to studies undertaken by the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE), the country has natural resources to generate 7.047 megawatts (MW),  but is only exploiting 20% (1.521 MW).
